Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker: Helps mix all the flavors.
  • Jigger or measuring spoons: For accurate measurements.
  • Strainer: To keep ice and pulp out of the glass.
  • Juicer: Makes squeezing fresh lemon juice simple.
  • Stirrer or long spoon: To stir if I don't have a shaker.
  • Rocks glass (or mason jar): For serving the drink.
  • Small knife and cutting board: To cut lemon wedges for garnish

Ingredients

I use fresh and simple ingredients for the best taste. Here’s my ingredient list for one drink:

  • 2 oz bourbon: I pick my favorite brand for a smooth base.
  • 1 oz fresh lemon juice: Fresh-squeezed gives the best flavor.
  • 1 oz honey syrup: I mix equal parts honey and hot water to make it easy to blend.
  • Ice: To chill the drink.
  • Lemon wheel or wedge optional: For garnish.
  • Sprig of mint optional: Adds a nice aroma.

Instructions

I follow these steps to make the cocktail:

  • Fill a shaker with ice.
  • Pour in 2 oz bourbon, 1 oz fresh lemon juice, and 1 oz honey syrup.
  • Shake well for about 15 seconds. This chills the drink and mixes the ingredients.
  • Strain the liquid into a rocks glass filled with ice.
  • Garnish with a lemon wheel or wedge. I add a mint sprig if I like a fresh note.
  • Serve right away while cold.

Notes

I usually adjust the sweetness or tartness to fit my taste. If I want a sweeter drink, I just add a bit more honey syrup.
If I prefer it less sweet, I use less syrup or maybe a bit more lemon juice. For a twist, sometimes I’ll swap in orange or grapefruit juice instead of lemon. Changes things up, but keeps it easy.
I always use fresh lemon juice, never bottled. The fresh juice just gives a brighter taste, honestly. I serve the drink right after mixing, before the ice melts and messes up the flavor
