Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Jigger or measuring cup
  • Citrus juicer
  • Strainer
  • Margarita or rocks glass
  • Ice

Ingredients

For one hibiscus margarita, you'll need:

  • 2 oz tequila
  • 1 oz lime juice
  • 1 oz hibiscus syrup
  • 1/2 oz triple sec or orange liqueur
  • Ice
  • Salt for rimming optional
  • Lime wheel or hibiscus flower for garnish optional

To make hibiscus syrup at home, steep 1/2 cup dried hibiscus flowers in 1 cup hot water for 10 minutes. Strain and stir in 1 cup sugar until dissolved. Let cool before using.

Instructions

  • If desired, rim a glass with salt. Rub a lime wedge on the rim and dip in salt.
  • Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.
  • Add tequila, lime juice, hibiscus syrup, and triple sec to the shaker.
  • Shake well for 10-15 seconds until chilled.
  • Strain the drink into the prepared glass filled with ice.
  • Garnish with a lime wheel or hibiscus flower if desired.

Serve and enjoy your hibiscus margarita!

    Notes

This recipe can be easily doubled or tripled to make a bigger batch. For a frozen version, blend all ingredients with 1 cup of ice until smooth.
Adjust the sweetness by adding more or less hibiscus syrup to suit your taste. For a less strong drink, add a splash of soda water.
Store leftover hibiscus syrup in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. It's great in other cocktails or mixed with sparkling water for a non-alcoholic drink.
