Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or large jar with a lid
  • Muddler
  • Jigger or small measuring cup
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Citrus juicer
  • Tall glass
  • Spoon or cocktail stirrer
  • Ice cube tray

Ingredients

  • 1 large grapefruit to yield about 1/2 cup fresh juice
  • 4-5 fresh sage leaves
  • 1 tablespoon honey or agave syrup
  • 0.5 cup club soda or sparkling water
  • Ice cubes
  • Grapefruit slice for garnish, optional
  • Extra sage sprig for garnish, optional

Instructions

  • Drop the sage leaves into a cocktail shaker or jar.
  • Muddle them with the honey or agave to release the oils.
  • Add the fresh grapefruit juice and fill the shaker halfway with ice.
  • Shake well for about 15 seconds until chilled and mixed.
  • Strain the liquid into a tall glass filled with fresh ice.
  • Slowly pour in the club soda or sparkling water and stir gently.
  • Garnish your drink with a grapefruit slice and a sprig of sage if you like.

Notes

Tweak the sweetener based on the grapefruit's tartness. Pink grapefruit yields a sweeter flavor. Mix everything except soda ahead for a crowd, and add soda right before serving. For extra zing, run a grapefruit peel around the rim.
