Ingredients

  • 2 oz vodka or pomegranate vodka
  • 1 oz grapefruit juice freshly squeezed
  • 0.75 oz lemon juice freshly squeezed; or lime juice
  • 0.5 oz simple syrup or honey pomegranate syrup or maple syrup
  • 0.25 oz orange liqueur Cointreau or triple sec
  • dash Angostura bitters optional
  • dash grenadine optional, for color
  • ice cubes for shaking and serving
  • 1 wedge grapefruit for garnish
  • 1 sprig mint optional, for garnish
  • 1 sprig rosemary optional, for garnish
  • splash club soda or tonic water optional, to top

Instructions

  • Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice.
  • Add vodka, grapefruit juice, lemon (or lime) juice, simple (or honey/maple) syrup, and orange liqueur.
  • Shake hard for about 15 seconds until the shaker is frosty.
  • Strain into a chilled rocks glass with fresh ice.
  • Optional: add a splash of club soda or tonic water for a lighter drink.
  • Garnish with a grapefruit wedge and a sprig of mint or rosemary. Serve immediately.

Notes

Freshly squeezed juices make the biggest flavor difference. If you don’t have pomegranate vodka, use plain vodka and add a little pomegranate juice or syrup. Swap orange liqueur for elderflower liqueur for a floral twist. A few drops of bitters or a dash of cranberry juice leans this toward a New England sour. Rosemary simple syrup adds an herbal layer.
