Equipment

  • High-quality blender
  • Citrus juicer or reamer
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Cocktail shaker (optional)
  • Ice cube tray
  • Tall glasses for serving
  • Cutting board and knife
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Stirring spoon
  • Pitcher (if making multiple servings)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh grapefruit juice about 2 medium grapefruits
  • ½ cup fresh lemon juice about 3-4 lemons
  • 3 tablespoons honey or agave syrup
  • 2 cups sparkling water
  • Ice cubes
  • Mint leaves for garnish
  • Grapefruit or lemon slices for garnish
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon grenadine for color
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon ginger juice for extra zing

Use fresh-squeezed juices whenever possible for the best flavor.

Instructions

  • Juice the citrus fruits. Cut the grapefruits and lemons in half and juice them using a citrus juicer. Strain to remove seeds and pulp.
  • Make the base mixture. In a pitcher, combine the grapefruit juice, lemon juice, and honey. Stir until the honey dissolves completely.
  • Chill the mixture. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow flavors to blend.
  • Prepare the glasses. Fill tall glasses with ice cubes. If desired, run a grapefruit wedge around the rim and dip in sugar for a decorative touch.
  • Mix the drink. Pour the citrus mixture into each glass, filling about halfway. Top with sparkling water.
  • Garnish and serve. Add a mint sprig and a slice of grapefruit or lemon to each glass. Serve immediately.

Notes

This mocktail can be customized in many ways.
For a sweeter version, add more honey or try simple syrup.
For a more intense flavor, add a dash of ginger juice or a pinch of cayenne pepper.
The base mixture can be prepared up to 2 days in advance and stored in the refrigerator.
Just add the sparkling water right before serving to maintain the fizz.
For a party version, multiply the recipe and keep the base in a pitcher. Let guests add their own sparkling water and garnishes.
Children typically enjoy this drink with extra honey and less grapefruit juice.
The recipe yields about 4 servings and takes approximately 15 minutes to prepare.
