Equipment

  • Muddler or wooden spoon
  • Cocktail shaker
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Collins glass
  • Measuring cups/spoons
  • Citrus juicer
  • Ice cube tray

Ingredients

  • 4 oz fresh grapefruit juice about 1 medium grapefruit
  • 4-5 fresh basil leaves
  • 1 oz simple syrup
  • 2 oz sparkling water
  • Ice cubes
  • Grapefruit slice and basil leaf for garnish
  • Optional: 1/4 oz fresh lime juice

Instructions

  • Fill the cocktail shaker with ice.
  • Add basil leaves to the shaker and muddle gently to release oils.
  • Pour in the fresh grapefruit juice and simple syrup.
  • Shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds until well chilled.
  • Strain the mixture into a collins glass filled with ice.
  • Top with sparkling water and stir gently.
  • Garnish with a grapefruit slice and fresh basil leaf.

Notes

The mocktail tastes best with freshly squeezed grapefruit juice. Store-bought juice can work but may lack the bright flavor.
For a sweeter drink, add more simple syrup in 1/4 oz increments.
Make ahead tip: Juice can be prepared up to 24 hours in advance and stored in an airtight container in the fridge.
To make simple syrup, mix equal parts sugar and hot water until sugar dissolves. Let cool before using.
