Equipment

  • Small saucepan
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Measuring spoons and cups
  • Heatproof mug
  • Stirring spoon
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Peeler (optional)

Ingredients

  • 2 oz whiskey bourbon or Irish whiskey
  • 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup
  • 1/2 oz fresh lemon juice about half a lemon
  • 1/2 cup hot water just off the boil
  • 1 –2 slices fresh ginger peeled
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 lemon peel for garnish
  • Optional: 1 clove or 1 star anise
  • Optional: 1 tsp ginger syrup for extra sweetness

Instructions

  • Add ginger slices and cinnamon stick to a small saucepan.
  • Pour in 1/2 cup hot water and simmer gently for 2–3 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and stir in the honey until dissolved.
  • Add lemon juice to your mug.
  • Strain the hot ginger water into the mug using a fine mesh strainer.
  • Add the whiskey and stir to combine.
  • Taste and adjust with more honey or lemon juice if desired.
  • Garnish with a lemon peel, extra cinnamon stick, or a star anise pod.
  • Serve hot and enjoy.
