Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or mason jar with lid
  • Muddler or wooden spoon
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Citrus juicer
  • Cutting Board
  • Sharp knife
  • Jigger or measuring cups/spoons
  • Highball glasses
  • Ice cube tray (preferably large cubes for slower melting)
  • Vegetable peeler (for citrus twists)

Ingredients

  • 2 inches fresh ginger root peeled and sliced
  • 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice about 2 lemons
  • 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground turmeric optional
  • 1 cup sparkling water
  • Ice cubes
  • Lemon slices and crystallized ginger for garnish

For a stronger ginger flavor, use more ginger root.

Instructions

  • Muddle the sliced ginger in the bottom of your cocktail shaker or mason jar. Press firmly to release the oils and flavors.
  • Add the fresh lemon juice, honey or maple syrup, and turmeric (if using). Stir until the honey dissolves completely.
  • Fill the shaker halfway with ice, secure the lid, and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds.
  • Strain the mixture into two highball glasses filled with fresh ice.
  • Top each glass with sparkling water, about 1/2 cup per glass.
  • Gently stir to combine all ingredients without losing too much carbonation.
  • Garnish with a lemon slice and piece of crystallized ginger on the rim of each glass.

This recipe makes two servings. For a larger batch, simply multiply the ingredients while maintaining the same ratios.

    Notes

This mocktail can be customized in many ways.
Try adding fresh herbs like mint or basil for an aromatic twist. For extra sweetness, use flavored sparkling water instead of plain.
The ginger-lemon base can be prepared up to 3 days ahead and stored in the refrigerator. Just add ice and sparkling water when ready to serve.
For a spicier version, include a small pinch of cayenne pepper.
Those who enjoy a more sour profile can increase the lemon juice or add a splash of apple cider vinegar.
This drink works well for parties because you can prepare the base mixture ahead of time and let guests add their preferred amount of sparkling water and ice.
