Equipment

  • Heatproof mug
  • Small saucepan
  • Bar spoon
  • Jigger
  • Strainer
  • Grater
  • Citrus juicer
  • Muddler

Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon or irish whiskey
  • 3-4 slices fresh ginger or 1 tbsp ginger syrup
  • 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup
  • 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 4-6 oz boiling water or ginger tea
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 star anise optional
  • 2-3 whole cloves optional
  • lemon peel for garnish
  • orange peel for garnish
  • brown sugar optional, for sweetness

Instructions

  • Add the ginger slices or ginger syrup to your mug.
  • Pour in bourbon (or irish whiskey) and honey (or maple syrup).
  • Add the lemon juice and give it a good stir.
  • Pour in boiling water or hot ginger tea, filling the mug.
  • Drop in a cinnamon stick, star anise, and cloves if you’re using them.
  • Stir well so the honey dissolves.
  • Garnish with a twist of lemon or orange peel.
  • Taste and add more brown sugar or honey if it needs extra sweetness.
  • Let it steep for a minute so the flavors blend. Remove the spices before drinking if you don’t want them too strong.

Notes

Dark rum or irish whiskey can substitute for bourbon. Ginger syrup is a shortcut if you don’t have fresh ginger. Try hot ginger tea instead of water for extra kick. Don’t let the spices steep too long or they’ll overpower the drink. Easily doubled for a crowd.
