Equipment

  • Silver julep cup (traditional) or highball glass
  • Muddler
  • Measuring jigger (1-2 oz)
  • Bar spoon
  • Straw
  • Ice crusher or Lewis bag with mallet
  • Small knife for fruit preparation

Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon whiskey preferably Kentucky bourbon
  • 1/2 oz simple syrup
  • 8-10 fresh mint leaves plus extra sprig for garnish
  • 1/2 cup crushed ice
  • 5-6 fresh blueberries
  • 3-4 fresh strawberries sliced
  • 1 tbsp whipped cream optional

Instructions

  • Prepare the mint: Place mint leaves in the bottom of your cup or glass. Add simple syrup.
  • Muddle gently: Press the mint leaves with a muddler to release oils, but don't shred the leaves. You want to extract the mint flavor without bitterness.
  • Add fruit: Place blueberries in the bottom of the glass. Reserve a few strawberry slices for garnish.
  • Build the drink: Pour bourbon over the muddled mint and berries.
  • Add ice: Fill the glass with crushed ice, packing it down gently.
  • Garnish: Top with a small dollop of whipped cream if desired. Arrange remaining strawberry slices and a mint sprig on top.
  • Serve immediately: The ice will begin to melt and frost the outside of a metal cup, creating the signature julep look.

Notes

This cocktail is best served right after you make it, since the ice will dilute the drink pretty quickly. If you want a non-alcoholic version, swap the bourbon for 2 oz of strong-brewed black tea that's been chilled.
The red, white, and blue layers look best in a clear glass. If you use a traditional silver julep cup, you won't see the colors as much, but your drink will stay colder longer.
For an extra-frosty effect, pre-chill your glasses in the freezer for about 15 minutes before you make the cocktail.
