Equipment

  • Mixing glass or small pitcher
  • Bar spoon or long-handled spoon
  • Jigger or measuring tool
  • Fine strainer (optional)
  • Rocks glass
  • Large ice cube or ice mold

Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon
  • 0.5 oz simple syrup or demerara syrup
  • 1 oz espresso fresh, cooled
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • orange peel for garnish
  • coffee liqueur few drops, optional for extra depth
  • ice for stirring and serving

Instructions

  • Brew 1 oz espresso and let it cool slightly.
  • Add bourbon, simple (or demerara) syrup, cooled espresso, and bitters to a mixing glass. Add a few drops of coffee liqueur if using.
  • Fill with ice and stir for 20–30 seconds until well chilled and properly diluted.
  • Strain into a rocks glass over a large ice cube.
  • Express the orange peel over the drink, rub it around the rim, and drop it in. Serve immediately.

Notes

Use a medium or dark roast espresso so the coffee stands up to the bourbon. Demerara syrup adds subtle molasses notes. Chill the glass first for an extra-cold sip. Adjust sweetness with a touch more syrup, or brightness with an extra dash of bitters or orange oils.
