Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Muddler
  • Strainer
  • Jigger
  • Bar spoon
  • Rocks glass or coupe glass
  • Small plate
  • Fine mesh sieve
  • Ice cubes

Ingredients

  • 2 oz tequila white or gold
  • 1 oz lime juice freshly squeezed
  • 0.5 oz simple syrup
  • 0.5 oz crème de cassis or blackberry syrup
  • 2 oz cranberry juice or pomegranate juice
  • 1 oz grapefruit juice or orange juice
  • grenadine splash, or Pama liqueur, for color
  • fresh blackberries for muddling and garnish; or pomegranate arils
  • black lava salt optional, for rim
  • seltzer, ginger beer, or grapefruit soda to top
  • jalapeño slice optional, for heat

Instructions

  • Optionally chill your serving glass. Rim with lime juice and dip in black lava salt.
  • In a cocktail shaker, muddle a few fresh blackberries.
  • Add tequila, lime juice, simple syrup, crème de cassis (or blackberry syrup), and cranberry (or pomegranate) juice.
  • Fill the shaker with ice and shake about 15 seconds until well chilled.
  • Strain into the prepared glass over fresh ice.
  • Top with a splash of grapefruit soda, ginger beer, or seltzer. Add a jalapeño slice if desired.
  • Garnish with blackberries or pomegranate arils and serve immediately.

Notes

For a deeper red hue, add a small splash of grenadine or Pama. Adjust sweetness by reducing or increasing simple syrup. Fine-strain for a cleaner texture, or leave some fruit pulp for a rustic look.
