Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or large glass
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Ice tray
  • Highball glasses or tumblers
  • Citrus juicer (optional)
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Muddler or wooden spoon
  • Cutting board and knife
  • Vegetable peeler (for garnish)

Ingredients

  • 2 oz ¼ cup cranberry juice (unsweetened)
  • 1 oz 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 1 oz 2 tablespoons ginger syrup*
  • 4 oz ½ cup soda water or ginger ale
  • Ice cubes
  • Fresh cranberries for garnish
  • Lime wheel for garnish
  • Candied ginger piece for garnish

*For ginger syrup: Combine 1 cup water, 1 cup sugar, and ¼ cup sliced fresh ginger in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Cool and strain.

Instructions

  • Prepare the glass: Fill a highball glass with ice cubes.
  • Mix the base: In a cocktail shaker, combine cranberry juice, fresh lime juice, and ginger syrup.
  • Shake it up: Add ice to the shaker and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds until well-chilled.
  • Strain and pour: Strain the mixture into the prepared glass filled with ice.
  • Add fizz: Top with soda water or ginger ale. Stir gently to combine.
  • Garnish: Add fresh cranberries, a lime wheel, and a piece of candied ginger for garnish.

The key to this mocktail is the balance between tart cranberry, spicy ginger, and bright lime.

    Notes

This mocktail can be prepared in advance (without the soda water) and stored in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Add the fizzy component just before serving.
For a spicier version, muddle a few slices of fresh ginger in the shaker before adding the other ingredients. A cinnamon stick makes a festive garnish during holiday seasons.
The recipe easily scales up for parties. Create a large batch by multiplying the ingredients (except soda water) and storing in a pitcher. Let guests add their own ice and soda water.
For a lower-calorie option, substitute the ginger syrup with a sugar-free alternative or use diet ginger ale.
