Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Jigger
  • Strainer
  • Bar spoon
  • Rocks glass or coupe glass
  • Large ice cube tray
  • Small saucepan

Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon or rye whiskey
  • 1 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 3/4 oz simple syrup infused with cloves optional
  • 1/2 oz fresh orange juice or blood orange juice
  • 1 egg white optional
  • 2 dashes bitters
  • Ice cubes or 1 large ice cube
  • Orange slice or blood orange wheel for garnish
  • Whole cloves or pinch of ground cloves for garnish

Instructions

  • Pour whiskey, lemon juice, orange juice, simple syrup, and egg white (if using) into a shaker.
  • Dry shake (no ice) for about 10 seconds to create foam.
  • Add ice and shake again until chilled.
  • Strain into a rocks glass over a large ice cube or into a coupe glass straight up.
  • Add 2 dashes of bitters on top.
  • Garnish with an orange slice, blood orange wheel, or whole cloves.

Notes

Bourbon adds sweetness while rye gives spice. Infuse simple syrup with cloves for added depth. A large ice cube melts slower and chills longer. Garnish with clove-studded orange for extra aroma.
