Equipment

  • Matcha bowl (chawan)
  • Bamboo whisk (chasen)
  • Fine mesh sieve
  • Milk frother or small saucepan
  • Measuring spoons
  • Small spoon
  • Heat-safe mug

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon ceremonial grade matcha or matcha green tea powder
  • 2-3 oz hot water not boiling, about 175°F
  • 6-8 oz steamed milk dairy, oat, almond, soy, or coconut milk
  • 1-2 teaspoons honey, agave nectar, or stevia to taste
  • 1-2 drops vanilla extract optional
  • vanilla liqueur or whiskey for a boozy kick

Instructions

  • Sift matcha powder into a matcha bowl using a fine-mesh sieve.
  • Add hot water and whisk with a bamboo whisk until smooth and slightly frothy.
  • Heat and froth milk using a saucepan or frother until warm and foamy (but not boiling).
  • Pour steamed milk into the whisked matcha.
  • Stir in honey, agave nectar, or stevia until dissolved.
  • Add a drop of vanilla extract (and a splash of vanilla liqueur or whiskey, if using).
  • Pour into a heat-safe mug and serve hot.

Notes

Milk choice changes the flavor—oat milk for sweetness, coconut for richness, dairy for creaminess. Don’t overheat the matcha to keep it smooth and preserve antioxidants (EGCG). Add spirits lightly, so the matcha stays center stage. Try with fresh vanilla or orange zest for a unique twist!
