Equipment

  • Tall glass (12-16 oz)
  • Cocktail shaker or mason jar with lid
  • Citrus juicer
  • Jigger or measuring cups
  • Bar spoon or long-handled spoon
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Ice cube tray
  • Cutting Board
  • Sharp knife for garnishes

Ingredients

  • 2 oz fresh orange juice
  • 1 oz fresh grapefruit juice
  • 1 oz fresh lemon juice
  • ½ oz grenadine syrup
  • ½ oz simple syrup equal parts sugar and water
  • 4 oz sparkling water or club soda
  • Ice cubes
  • Orange and lemon slices for garnish
  • Fresh mint leaves optional

For simple syrup: Mix ½ cup sugar with ½ cup water in a small saucepan. Heat until sugar dissolves completely, then cool before using.

Instructions

  • Prepare your glass: Fill a tall glass with ice cubes.
  • Mix the base: In a cocktail shaker, combine orange juice, grapefruit juice, lemon juice, and simple syrup with ice. Shake for 15-20 seconds until well-chilled.
  • Strain and pour: Strain the mixture into your prepared glass, filling it about halfway.
  • Create the sunrise effect: Slowly pour the grenadine along the inside edge of the glass. It will sink to the bottom, creating a gradient effect.
  • Add fizz: Gently top with sparkling water.
  • Garnish: Place an orange slice and lemon slice on the rim of the glass. Add a sprig of mint if desired.
  • Serve immediately while the layers are distinct and bubbles are fresh.

Notes

This mocktail can be prepared in batches for parties. Mix the citrus juices and simple syrup ahead of time and store in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.
For a sweeter version, increase the simple syrup to 1 oz. For a less sweet option, reduce to ¼ oz or omit entirely.
Children especially enjoy watching the color gradient form. Consider serving in clear plastic cups for kid-friendly parties.
For an adult version, add 1.5 oz of white rum or vodka to the shaker with the juices.
The fresh citrus juices provide vitamin C and antioxidants, making this a healthier alternative to sugary sodas and commercial drink mixes.
