Equipment

  • Double old-fashioned glass
  • Bar spoon
  • Jigger or shot glass
  • Small pitcher or shaker
  • Fine strainer
  • Ice cubes

Ingredients

  • 1.5 oz vodka regular or chocolate vodka
  • 1 oz coffee liqueur such as Kahlúa
  • 1 oz chocolate liqueur or chocolate syrup
  • 1 oz heavy cream or half-and-half or milk
  • 0.5 oz simple syrup optional, for extra sweetness
  • ice cubes
  • cocoa powder or shaved chocolate for garnish

Instructions

  • Fill a double old fashioned glass halfway with ice cubes.
  • Pour in the vodka, coffee liqueur, and chocolate liqueur (or chocolate syrup).
  • Stir gently with a bar spoon until well-chilled.
  • Slowly pour the cream over the back of the spoon to float it on top; stir lightly if you prefer a blended color.
  • Sweeten with simple syrup to taste (optional) and finish with a dusting of cocoa powder or shaved chocolate.

Notes

Keep everything cold for the silkiest texture. Chocolate vodka deepens the cocoa flavor; regular vodka keeps it classic. Swap heavy cream for half-and-half or milk to lighten it up. For a fully blended style, shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a fresh glass of ice.
