Equipment

  • Old Fashioned glass or rocks glass
  • Mixing glass
  • Jigger
  • Bar spoon
  • Strainer
  • Peeler or zester
  • Small espresso cup or shot glass
  • Large ice cube or ice cubes

Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon or chocolate whiskey
  • 0.5 oz chocolate liqueur or simple syrup
  • 1 oz espresso freshly brewed, cooled
  • 2 dashes chocolate bitters
  • 1 cube sugar optional, for extra sweetness
  • ice ice cubes or one large ice sphere
  • orange peel for garnish
  • dark chocolate shavings for garnish; optional

Instructions

  • Brew a shot of espresso and let it cool slightly.
  • In a mixing glass, combine bourbon, espresso, chocolate liqueur (or simple syrup), and chocolate bitters.
  • Fill with ice and stir for about 30 seconds until well-chilled and diluted.
  • Strain into an old fashioned glass over a large ice cube (or fresh ice).
  • Express an orange peel over the drink and drop it in. Garnish with a pinch of dark chocolate shavings if desired.

Notes

Stir, don’t shake—this keeps the texture silky. Use a bourbon with caramel and vanilla notes for the best harmony with espresso. Large ice melts more slowly, preserving balance. Nutrition estimated with chocolate liqueur and without the optional sugar cube or chocolate garnish; values vary with brands.
