Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Measuring jigger
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Mixing glass
  • Bar spoon
  • Small grater or microplane
  • Serving glass

Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon swap with whiskey, brandy, or rum if desired
  • 1 oz brown sugar simple syrup equal parts brown sugar and water, heated until dissolved
  • 2 oz whole milk or heavy cream for extra richness
  • 0.25 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • freshly grated nutmeg for garnish
  • ground cinnamon optional for garnish
  • ice cubes for shaking

Instructions

  • Add bourbon, brown sugar simple syrup, milk or cream, and vanilla extract to your cocktail shaker.
  • Fill the shaker about three-quarters full with ice.
  • Shake for about 15 seconds.
  • Strain into a chilled glass using a fine mesh strainer.
  • Grate fresh nutmeg over the top, and add cinnamon if desired.
  • Serve immediately while cold.

Notes

Whole milk makes a lighter drink, while heavy cream adds extra richness. Freshly grated nutmeg is more aromatic than pre-ground. Adjust sweetness by changing the amount of brown sugar syrup. Brown sugar simple syrup keeps for two weeks in the fridge.
