Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Wooden spoon
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Heatproof mugs or glasses
  • Peeler or zester

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle dry red wine 750 ml, like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 0.5 cup bourbon
  • 0.25 cup brandy optional, for extra depth
  • 0.25 cup maple syrup or honey
  • 1 orange sliced
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 2 star anise pods
  • orange peel for garnish

Instructions

  • Pour the red wine into a saucepan and set it over low heat.
  • Add orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise.
  • Stir in maple syrup or honey. Warm gently for 10–15 minutes, just below a simmer.
  • Remove from heat. Stir in bourbon (and brandy, if using).
  • Strain out the spices and fruit through a fine mesh strainer.
  • Pour into mugs and garnish with orange peel or a cinnamon stick.

Notes

Use a medium-bodied dry red wine for best results. Don’t boil the mixture—gentle heat keeps the flavors balanced and the alcohol intact. Adjust sweetness and spice to taste. If reheating, do so slowly to preserve the bourbon’s flavor.
