Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Jigger
  • Citrus juicer
  • Strainer
  • Margarita glass or short tumbler
  • Small plate
  • Bar spoon
  • Ice cubes

Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon
  • 1 oz lime juice freshly squeezed
  • 0.5 oz orange liqueur Cointreau, triple sec, or Grand Marnier
  • 0.5 oz simple syrup or agave syrup, to taste
  • 0.5 oz tequila optional, for extra bite
  • ice cubes for shaking and serving
  • coarse salt or sugar for the rim
  • lime wheel or orange slice for garnish

Instructions

  • Run a lime wedge around the rim of your glass, then dip it in coarse salt (or sugar). Fill the glass with fresh ice.
  • Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice.
  • Add bourbon, lime juice, orange liqueur, and simple (or agave) syrup. Add tequila if using.
  • Shake hard for about 15 seconds until the shaker feels icy cold.
  • Strain into the prepared glass over fresh ice.
  • Garnish with a lime wheel or orange slice and serve.

Notes

Fresh lime juice is key. Maple syrup adds a cozy note while agave keeps the profile bright. For a spicy riff, muddle a slice of jalapeño; for a smoky vibe, use smoked salt on the rim. Optional splash of fresh orange juice can lighten the drink.
Shake well with plenty of ice for the smoothest texture and crisp chill.
