Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Jigger
  • Bar spoon
  • Strainer
  • Lowball glass
  • Small saucepan
  • Citrus juicer
  • Ice cubes

Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon smooth, not too smoky
  • 1 oz pure maple syrup or spiced maple syrup (see notes)
  • 0.75 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 2 dashes orange bitters
  • 2 oz soda water or prosecco, for fizz
  • 1 slice fresh ginger or muddled for more spice
  • cinnamon stick or star anise for garnish
  • ice cubes for shaking and serving

Instructions

  • Fill the shaker halfway with ice.
  • Add bourbon, maple syrup, lemon juice, and orange bitters.
  • Shake hard for about 15 seconds until cold.
  • Strain into a lowball glass with fresh ice.
  • Top with soda water or prosecco for fizz.
  • Stir gently with a bar spoon.
  • Garnish with a cinnamon stick, star anise, or a thin slice of ginger.

Notes

For spiced maple syrup, simmer maple syrup with a cinnamon stick and star anise for 5 minutes, then cool. Fresh lemon juice brightens the flavors—skip bottled. For a lighter drink, use soda water; for something festive, try prosecco. Chill the glass to keep the fizz longer. Add more ginger for extra spice, or let guests choose their own garnish.
