  • Strainer
  • Ice crusher or mallet
  • Small saucepan
  • Fine-mesh strainer

Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon whiskey Woodford Reserve recommended
  • 0.5 oz mint simple syrup homemade or store-bought
  • 4-5 fresh mint leaves
  • 1 sprig fresh mint for garnish
  • 0.25 oz chocolate liqueur or a few drops of chocolate bitters
  • crushed ice enough to fill the glass
  • dark chocolate small piece for garnish, optional

Instructions

  • Drop the mint leaves into your chilled glass.
  • Gently muddle them with the simple syrup to get those oils out.
  • Pour in the bourbon and chocolate liqueur (or bitters).
  • Fill the glass with crushed ice, packing it in.
  • Stir slowly with a bar spoon until the outside of the glass feels frosty.
  • Add more crushed ice if it settles.
  • Garnish with a fresh mint sprig and, if you’re feeling it, a little dark chocolate.

Notes

Different bourbons affect the flavor balance—sweeter ones highlight the chocolate, spicier ones enhance the mint. Crushed ice is essential for the proper texture and dilution. Try clapping fresh mint before garnishing to release its aroma. Chocolate mint leaves, if available, offer a natural twist.
