Equipment

  • Muddler
  • Cocktail shaker
  • Strainer
  • Highball glass
  • Measuring jigger (1 oz and 2 oz)
  • Bar spoon
  • Mesh strainer (optional)

Ingredients

  • 2 oz white rum
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 3/4 oz simple syrup
  • 15-20 fresh blueberries plus extra for garnish
  • 8-10 fresh mint leaves plus a sprig for garnish
  • Club soda
  • Ice cubes
  • 1 lime wedge for garnish

For simple syrup, mix equal parts sugar and water, heat until dissolved, then cool. Thawed frozen blueberries work well when fresh ones aren’t available.

Instructions

  • Add blueberries, mint leaves, and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker.
  • Muddle gently to release the flavors without crushing the mint completely.
  • Add lime juice, rum, and ice to the shaker.
  • Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds until well-chilled.
  • Strain the mixture into a highball glass filled with fresh ice. Top with club soda and stir gently with a bar spoon.
  • Garnish with a sprig of mint, a few fresh blueberries, and a lime wedge on the rim of the glass.

Notes

For a stronger blueberry flavor, make blueberry-infused simple syrup by adding a cup of blueberries to the syrup while it's hot, then strain after cooling. Make a non-alcoholic version by replacing the rum with extra club soda or lemon-lime soda.
Serve the cocktail immediately after preparation while the mint is fresh and the club soda is fizzy. For parties, prepare the muddled mixture in advance and add ice, rum, and club soda just before serving.
