Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or mason jar with lid
  • Muddler (or wooden spoon as alternative)
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Highball glasses
  • Ice cube tray
  • Blender (optional, for blueberry puree)
  • Knife and cutting board

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh blueberries plus extra for garnish
  • 8-10 fresh basil leaves plus sprigs for garnish
  • 2 tablespoons honey or agave syrup
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • Sparkling water or club soda
  • Ice cubes
  • Lemon slices for garnish

Optional additions:

  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Cucumber slices
  • Mint leaves

Fresh ingredients make a difference in this recipe. When blueberries aren't in season, frozen can work for the purée, but use fresh for garnish.

Instructions

  • Prepare blueberry mixture: Reserve a few blueberries for garnish. Place remaining blueberries in a blender with 1 tablespoon of honey and blend until smooth. Strain if desired for a smoother texture.
  • Muddle the basil: Place 6-8 basil leaves in the bottom of your shaker or jar. Gently muddle to release the oils and aroma.
  • Mix the drink: Add the blueberry purée, lemon juice, and remaining honey to the muddled basil. Fill the shaker halfway with ice and shake for 15-20 seconds.
  • Assemble: Fill highball glasses with ice. Strain the mixture into the glasses, filling them about halfway.
  • Finish: Top with sparkling water or club soda. Stir gently to combine.
  • Garnish: Add fresh blueberries, a basil sprig, and a lemon slice to each glass before serving.

Notes

This mocktail can be prepared in advance up to the sparkling water step. The blueberry-basil mixture can be refrigerated for up to 24 hours.
For a frozen version, blend the strained mixture with ice for a slushie texture. The recipe makes approximately 2-3 servings depending on glass size.
For a less sweet version, reduce the honey and add more lemon juice. Those wanting a stronger basil flavor can steep basil leaves in warm water, then cool before using.
Children especially enjoy this drink when served in fun glasses with colorful straws. The recipe doubles easily for parties by preparing the base mixture in larger quantities.
