Add blackberries and mint leaves to the julep cup.
Muddle gently to release the berry juice and mint oils.
Pour in the bourbon and simple syrup.
Fill the cup halfway with crushed ice and stir for 10-15 seconds.
Add more crushed ice to form a mound above the rim.
Garnish with fresh mint sprigs and a blackberry.
Serve with a short straw.
Notes
The drink tastes best with fresh blackberries during peak season from July to September.Keep mint leaves fresh by storing them in a glass of water in the fridge.Choose a good quality bourbon between 90-100 proof for the best flavor balance.Pre-chill the julep cup in the freezer for 5 minutes before mixing the drink.Don't over-muddle the mint leaves or they'll become bitter.
