  • Julep cup or highball glass
  • Cocktail strainer
  • Ice crusher or Lewis bag
  • Bar spoon

Ingredients

  • 6-8 fresh blackberries
  • 8-10 mint leaves plus extra for garnish
  • 2 oz bourbon
  • 1/2 oz simple syrup
  • Crushed ice
  • Fresh blackberry for garnish

Instructions

  • Add blackberries and mint leaves to the julep cup.
  • Muddle gently to release the berry juice and mint oils.
  • Pour in the bourbon and simple syrup.
  • Fill the cup halfway with crushed ice and stir for 10-15 seconds.
  • Add more crushed ice to form a mound above the rim.
  • Garnish with fresh mint sprigs and a blackberry.
  • Serve with a short straw.

Notes

The drink tastes best with fresh blackberries during peak season from July to September.
Keep mint leaves fresh by storing them in a glass of water in the fridge.
Choose a good quality bourbon between 90-100 proof for the best flavor balance.
Pre-chill the julep cup in the freezer for 5 minutes before mixing the drink.
Don't over-muddle the mint leaves or they'll become bitter.
