Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or mason jar with lid
  • Muddler (or wooden spoon as alternative)
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Highball glasses
  • Ice cube tray
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Citrus juicer (optional)
  • Cutting board and knife
  • Blender (if making berry puree from fresh berries)

Ingredients

For one serving:

  • 1/4 cup mixed berries strawberries, blueberries, raspberries
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
  • 2 teaspoons honey or maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup sparkling water
  • Ice cubes
  • Mint leaves for garnish
  • Lime wheel for garnish

Fresh berries work best, but frozen berries can be thawed and used when fresh aren't available.

Instructions

  • Prepare the berries: Wash and hull the strawberries if using, then quarter them. Clean other berries as needed.
  • Muddle the flavors: Place berries, grated ginger, and lime juice in a cocktail shaker or mason jar.
  • Muddle gently to release juices without completely crushing the berries.
  • Add sweetener: Mix in the honey or maple syrup until dissolved.
  • Shake with ice: Add several ice cubes to the shaker and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds.
  • Strain and serve: Strain the mixture into a highball glass filled with fresh ice.
  • Add bubbles: Top with sparkling water and stir gently to combine.
  • Garnish: Add mint leaves and a lime wheel to the rim of the glass.

The mocktail is best served immediately while cold and bubbly.

    Notes

This recipe can be easily multiplied to make a pitcher for gatherings. Prepare the berry mixture in advance but add the sparkling water just before serving to maintain carbonation.
For a smoother texture, blend the berries and strain before mixing with other ingredients. This creates a more uniform color and removes seeds.
Try different berry combinations based on what's in season. Blackberries add depth, while strawberries provide sweetness.
For extra ginger flavor, add a splash of ginger beer instead of some of the sparkling water. This works well for those who enjoy a stronger ginger kick.
