I make a Basil Smash using basic bar tools, nothing fancy, and ingredients that aren’t hard to find. Fresh basil is the star, giving the drink its herbal punch, while lemon and gin keep things crisp and lively.
Everything should honestly be as fresh as possible, especially the basil and lemon.
Instructions
I start by dropping the basil leaves into the shaker.
With my muddler, I gently press them—not mash, just enough to release that amazing aroma.
Then I add gin, fresh lemon juice, and simple syrup.
After that, I toss in some ice, seal the shaker, and shake hard for about 20 seconds—enough to chill and mix it all up.
Next, I strain the drink into an old-fashioned glass packed with fresh ice.
For a smooth texture and a clean look, I use a fine mesh strainer to catch any basil bits.
Once it’s in the glass, I top it with a fresh basil sprig for that extra burst of aroma. That’s it.
Notes
I always give the drink a quick taste before serving. Sometimes I’ll add a touch more syrup if the lemon is super sour, or dial it back if I want it more tart. The gin can really change the drink—a London Dry or any clear, balanced gin is usually my go-to. I never use dried basil; it just doesn’t work here. When I make simple syrup, I let it cool down before adding it to the shaker. Pressing the basil gently keeps the drink from turning bitter, so I try not to go overboard. If I’m in the mood for a twist, I might throw in a few cucumber slices, but honestly, the classic version is my favorite.
