Almond Old Fashioned Cocktail

Almond Old Fashioned Cocktail Recipe
A smooth, nutty riff on the classic Old Fashioned made with bourbon, a touch of amaretto, bitters, and an aromatic orange peel. Simple to stir, silky on the palate, and gently sweet.

Serving Size 1 cocktail

Equipment

  • Rocks glass
  • Old fashioned glass
  • Mixing glass
  • Bar spoon
  • Jigger
  • Muddler
  • Strainer
  • Ice

Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon
  • 0.25 oz amaretto almond liqueur
  • 1 sugar cube or 1/2 tsp simple syrup
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • water splash; to help dissolve sugar
  • ice
  • orange peel for garnish

Instructions

  • Add the sugar cube to a mixing glass. Dash bitters and a splash of water over it, then muddle until the sugar dissolves. (If using simple syrup, skip the muddling step.)
  • Pour in the bourbon and amaretto, then add ice.
  • Stir for about 20 seconds until well-chilled and properly diluted.
  • Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice.
  • Express the orange peel over the drink to release the oils, then drop it in as garnish. Serve.

Notes

Keep the amaretto light—1/4 oz is usually enough so it complements rather than dominates. For more almond flavor, swap the sugar cube for almond syrup.
Chill the glass first and use a single large ice cube to slow dilution. A bourbon with a touch of char or spice adds depth.
