A smooth, nutty riff on the classic Old Fashioned made with bourbon, a touch of amaretto, bitters, and an aromatic orange peel. Simple to stir, silky on the palate, and gently sweet.
Add the sugar cube to a mixing glass. Dash bitters and a splash of water over it, then muddle until the sugar dissolves. (If using simple syrup, skip the muddling step.)
Pour in the bourbon and amaretto, then add ice.
Stir for about 20 seconds until well-chilled and properly diluted.
Strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice.
Express the orange peel over the drink to release the oils, then drop it in as garnish. Serve.
Notes
Keep the amaretto light—1/4 oz is usually enough so it complements rather than dominates. For more almond flavor, swap the sugar cube for almond syrup.Chill the glass first and use a single large ice cube to slow dilution. A bourbon with a touch of char or spice adds depth.
