Equipment

  • Espresso machine
  • Coffee maker
  • Cocktail shaker
  • Martini glass
  • Jigger
  • Measuring cup
  • Spoon
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Small bowl

Ingredients

  • 1 shot fresh espresso hot; about 1 oz
  • 1 oz vodka
  • 1 oz coffee liqueur e.g., Kahlúa or Tia Maria
  • 0.5 oz Irish cream liqueur optional
  • 1 scoop vanilla ice cream
  • ice cubes for shaking
  • salted caramel drizzle; optional garnish
  • coffee beans optional garnish
  • chocolate shavings optional garnish

Instructions

  • Brew the espresso and let it cool for 1–2 minutes.
  • Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice.
  • Add vodka, coffee liqueur, and Irish cream liqueur (if using) to the shaker.
  • Shake for about 15 seconds until well-chilled.
  • Place a scoop of vanilla ice cream into a chilled martini glass.
  • Strain the shaken mixture over the ice cream.
  • Gently pour the warm espresso over the top for the affogato effect.
  • Garnish with a drizzle of salted caramel, a couple of coffee beans, or chocolate shavings, if desired. Serve immediately.

Notes

Use strong, freshly brewed espresso to balance the sweetness. For a lighter drink, reduce the coffee liqueur.
Try vanilla or caramel-flavored vodka for a twist. A tiny pinch of sea salt can amplify chocolatey coffee notes.
No espresso machine? Brew extra-strong coffee as a substitute.
Pairs beautifully with tiramisu or chocolate desserts, but it’s satisfying on its own.
