Non-Alcoholic Mulled Wine Mocktail Recipe
There’s something so inviting about a warm, spiced drink that everyone at the table can enjoy. The way oranges, cinnamon sticks, and mulling spices transform a few simple juices—it’s honestly kind of magical.
You don’t need any fancy gadgets or hard-to-find ingredients for this. Just a few basics and a little time.
Equipment
- Large pot or Dutch oven
- Wooden spoon
- Strainer or sieve
- Ladle
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Cutting board
- Knife
- Heat-safe mugs or glasses
Having a Dutch oven or just a big pot helps the juices warm up slowly and gives plenty of space for the spices. I usually reach for a wooden spoon so I don’t scratch up my pot.
A strainer is a must for fishing out the cloves, star anise, and other bits before serving. And for serving, I stick with mugs that can handle a little heat—keeps the drink warm longer.
Ingredients
- 4 cups non-alcoholic red wine or 100% grape juice
- 2 cups pomegranate juice or cranberry juice
- 1 large orange (sliced into rounds)
- 4 whole cinnamon sticks
- 6 whole cloves
- 3 star anise pods
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar, maple syrup, or honey (to taste)
- 1 inch fresh ginger (sliced)
- 1/2 cup water
Orange slices bring a fresh, fruity note, and the pomegranate or cranberry juice adds a nice tartness. If I’m in the mood for something closer to the traditional version, I’ll use non-alcoholic red wine, but grape juice is a solid choice too.
The mulling spices—especially cinnamon sticks, star anise, and cloves—are what really make the kitchen smell amazing. I like to tweak the sweetness depending on who’s around.
Instructions
- Wash and slice the orange into thin rounds.
- Toss the orange slices, non-alcoholic red wine or grape juice, pomegranate or cranberry juice, cinnamon sticks, star anise, cloves, ginger, brown sugar (or maple syrup or honey), and water into your pot or Dutch oven.
- Give everything a gentle stir to mix it up.
- Heat on low to medium until it’s steaming hot (not boiling!), which takes about 15-20 minutes.
- Stir now and then to help the sweetener dissolve.
- Once the flavors have blended, use a strainer to pull out the spices and orange slices.
- Ladle the mulled mocktail into mugs, and if you’re feeling fancy, add a fresh orange slice or cinnamon stick to each cup.
Heating the mixture slowly is key—it lets the flavors from the spices really soak in. Just don’t let it boil, or you’ll lose some of that goodness.
Notes
Sometimes I swap in apple juice for pomegranate if I want it sweeter. If someone’s not into certain spices, it’s easy to leave them out or trade them for something like cardamom pods or extra ginger.
If I want it a bit sweeter, I’ll just stir in more honey or maple syrup at the end. It’s a comforting drink for winter nights, holidays, or whenever I’m craving a non-alcoholic mulled wine that actually tastes like something real.

Tasting Notes
When I take my first sip of this non-alcoholic mulled wine, there’s this cozy blend of spices that hits right away. Cinnamon and cloves fill the air, and honestly, it just smells like winter holidays.
The taste? Fruity, a bit tart, and pretty lively. I notice hints of orange and apple in there, which keep things bright.
The sweetness is gentle—definitely not overwhelming, which I appreciate. It’s easy to drink on its own, no need to dress it up.
At Christmas parties, I love how rich and inviting the color looks in a glass. Those spices really come through, but they don’t overpower everything else.
The drink just feels comfy and smooth. It’s the sort of thing you want to sip slowly, maybe while chatting by the fire.
I really like that this mocktail warms me up without the alcohol. It’s honestly great for everyone—kids, adults, whoever’s around.
Whenever I serve it, people always mention how the aroma just makes the whole place feel a little more festive.
