Looking for a cocktail that actually feels a little fancy but still packs a punch? The Espresso Martini has found its way into bars and living rooms everywhere.
This drink blends vodka, coffee liqueur, and fresh espresso for a rich, frothy experience with a solid caffeine kick.
This cocktail traces back to the 1980s, thanks to London bartender Dick Bradsell. Apparently, a model wanted something to “wake her up and mess her up,” and this was the answer.
The Espresso Martini is a hit as an after-dinner treat or a party opener. Its dark body and creamy foam make it look as good as it tastes—honestly, it’s a bit of a show-off.
Espresso Martini Cocktail Recipe
Equipment
- Cocktail shaker
- Strainer
- Jigger or measuring tool
- Martini glass or coupe glass
- Coffee maker or espresso machine
Ingredients
For a single serving:
- 1½ oz 45ml vodka
- 1 oz 30ml coffee liqueur (like Kahlúa)
- 1 oz 30ml freshly brewed espresso, cooled a bit
- ½ oz 15ml simple syrup (totally optional)
- 3 coffee beans for garnish
Go for good vodka if you can—it does make a difference.
Instructions
- Brew your espresso and let it sit for a minute or two to cool off.
- Fill your shaker with ice.
- Pour in the vodka, coffee liqueur, espresso, and simple syrup if you want a little extra sweetness.
- Shake hard for about 15 to 20 seconds. Don’t hold back—the foam depends on it.
- Strain the mix into your chilled martini glass.
- Drop three coffee beans right in the center of the foam for that classic look.
- Seriously, the shaking part is what gives you that creamy, Instagram-worthy foam.

Tasting Notes
The Espresso Martini hits a sweet spot between bitter and sweet. The coffee comes through first, rich and aromatic—coffee lovers will get it.
There’s a hint of vanilla from the vodka, blending with the coffee liqueur for a smooth feel. The sweetness depends on how much simple syrup you add, but it shouldn’t take over.
The vodka brings a gentle warmth, not too harsh, that plays nicely with the espresso’s bitterness.
Flavor Profile:
- Primary: Bold espresso, dark chocolate
- Secondary: Vanilla, caramel
- Finish: Lingering coffee with subtle sweetness
When it’s made right, you get that silky texture and creamy foam on top. It’s a little bit of luxury in a glass.
Let it warm up just a touch and the coffee flavors get even bigger, while the sweetness chills out.
Honestly, it’s a great companion for desserts—especially anything chocolate. Or skip dessert and just have the drink. Why not?
Substitute
Can’t find vodka or coffee liqueur for your Espresso Martini? No need to stress—there are some pretty decent alternatives.
For vodka, you could reach for white rum or even tequila blanco. Both bring a clean base that lets the coffee do its thing.
Out of coffee liqueur? You can whip up a quick stand-in at home. Just mix equal parts strong cold brew coffee and simple syrup.
Non-Alcoholic Version:
- Swap vodka for extra cold brew coffee
- Try coffee syrup instead of coffee liqueur
- Add a splash of vanilla extract if you want a little more depth
If caffeine’s not your friend, go with decaf coffee and decaf coffee liqueur. The taste is honestly pretty close.
