When I want a drink that feels fresh and a little different, I like making a Blood Orange Spritz.
This drink is easy to make and mixes the flavors of blood orange, sparkling wine, and a splash of soda for a light and refreshing taste. The bright red color also stands out and looks good at any table.
I enjoy this cocktail because it feels special but doesn’t take much time or effort.
If you’re looking for a simple way to upgrade your next brunch or evening, this recipe is a good choice. It’s a nice way to enjoy blood orange when it’s in season.
Blood Orange Spritz Cocktail Recipe
Equipment
- I use a few basic tools to make this cocktail. For measuring, I grab a jigger or a set of measuring spoons.
- A cocktail shaker is useful if I want the drink well mixed or a little chilled, but I can also stir it in the glass.
- A large wine glass works best for this spritz, letting me add ice and garnish comfortably.
- I keep a long spoon nearby for stirring. To juice the blood oranges, I sometimes use a hand juicer or a simple citrus press.
- A small paring knife helps me slice the oranges neatly for garnishing.
- If I want very cold drinks, I chill my glasses in the freezer for a few minutes first. I also keep a strainer handy if I want to avoid any pulp in my drink.
Ingredients
For my Blood Orange Spritz, I use fresh blood oranges for both juice and garnishes.
- I measure out about 2 ounces of freshly squeezed blood orange juice.
- I then pour in 3 ounces of chilled prosecco or another dry sparkling wine.
- To balance the flavors I add 1 ounce of club soda for some fizz. If I want more sweetness, I use 0.5 ounce of simple syrup.
- I always use plenty of ice to keep the drink cold.
- For garnish I cut a thin round slice or a small wedge of blood orange.
Instructions
- I begin by filling a large glass with ice.
- If I am using a shaker, I put the blood orange juice and simple syrup in first, then shake with ice for a few seconds to chill.
- Next, I strain or pour the juice into the glass.
- I slowly add the prosecco to avoid too much fizz or overflow. After that, I pour in the club soda and gently stir with a long spoon.
- For garnish, I float a blood orange slice on top.
- If I want more color or aroma, I tuck in a small sprig of rosemary or mint. I serve the drink immediately while it’s very cold and bubbly.

Tasting Notes
When I first taste the Blood Orange Spritz, I notice a bright, citrusy flavor right away.
The blood orange gives a gentle sweetness that balances the tangy notes.
The sparkling bubbles lift the flavors and add a refreshing feel.
There is also a mild bitterness that reminds me of classic Italian spritz drinks.
I smell fresh orange peel with a touch of floral aroma.
The color is eye-catching—deep pink and orange.
I find the finish to be clean and slightly tart.
Ice keeps the drink cool and smooth, making each sip pleasant and light.
If I want a sweeter taste, I add just a bit more juice or a splash of soda.
The flavors mix well and do not overpower each other. This makes it easy for me to enjoy more than one without feeling overwhelmed.
Substitute
If I don’t have blood oranges, I’ll just grab regular oranges, cara cara oranges, or even a few tangerines. Those all have a nice, sweet flavor that works well in this cocktail.
Sometimes, if I’m after a tarter kick, grapefruit juice does the trick too.
And if you want to skip the alcohol, it’s easy enough to swap prosecco for sparkling water or a non-alcoholic sparkling wine. The drink still comes out bubbly and super refreshing.
If I’m out of Aperol, I’ll reach for Campari. It does make the drink a bit more bitter and gives it a darker color, which isn’t a bad thing, honestly.
Every now and then, I’ll try orange liqueur like Cointreau or triple sec for a twist on the flavor.
Just a heads up—every substitute shifts the taste a bit. I usually find myself adjusting the amounts to get the balance just right.
